Central and Eastern Europe Moot Competition

Between 26 and 29 April, the team of the Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor participated in the competition on European Union law, the Central and Eastern Europe Moot Competition (CEEMC), which is held as a simulation of the preliminary ruling procedure before the Court of Justice of the EU. The Faculty of Law of the University of Maribor was represented by students Eva Ledinek, Lana Simončič, Alenka Tabaković and Vita Višič under the mentorship of assist. Živa Šuta and assoc. prof. dr. Petra Weingerl. Competitor Lana Simončič received the 'Noted Speaker' award.

The competition is organised by the British Law Centre within the framework of the educational institution Juris Angliae Scientia Ltd under the auspices of the Court of Justice of the EU and the Centre for European Legal Studies, University of Cambridge (CLES). The oral part of the CEEMC 2024 competition took place at the Prague Court before judges and advocates general of the Court of Justice of the EU and other experts in EU law. In the preliminary rounds, the central topic was the rule of law (interpretation of Article 19 TEU and Article 47 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights regarding the independence of national judges and Article 267 TFEU regarding the inhibition of the referral of a question for a preliminary ruling). After preliminary rounds against Sofia University and the University of Zagreb, the PFUM team managed to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition (Semifinals), where it also successfully competed with teams from Charles University and Alexandru Ioan Cuza University. The central topics of the semi-finals were the related reproduction right of film producers, the scope of the right of communication to the public, and the definition of the pastiche exception and its application in accordance with the InfoSoc Directive.
